Azerbaijani top diplomat explains border tensions with Yerevan by situation inside Armenia

Baku : Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said on Thursday that tensions between Yerevan and Baku are occurring because of the internal political situation in Armenia.

According to the Armenian Defense Ministry, six Armenian servicemen were captured on Thursday by the Azerbaijani military while being engaged in engineering work at the border. The Azerbaijan Defense Ministry accuses the detainees of making an attempt to cross the border.

“The hysterical behavior of Armenia around the process of delimitation of the Azerbaijani-Armenian border is not understandable. Azerbaijani servicemen are not deployed on the territory of Armenia but within our internationally recognized borders. Attempts to aggravate the situation around the process are based on tension and instability in the internal political processes in Armenia. The fact that all this happened during the pre-election period confirms this,” Bayramov said, as quoted by the state-run Azertac news agency.

According to the foreign minister, some political forces in Armenia are trying to use the current situation to “attack” their opponents.

“In general, we consider this tendency very harmful, we regard it as a blow to the implementation of the trilateral statement [on Karabakh] and stability in the region,” Bayramov added.
