6 kg gold worth Rs.2.90 cr seized at airport

Chennai, Apr 17 (UNI) Customs officials have seized six kg gold valued at Rs 2.90 crore from under the seat of an aircraft that arrived from Dubai at the Anna International airport here on Saturday.

A release from the Office of the Commissioner of Customs said based on intelligence that gold was likely to be smuggled from Dubai by concealing in aircraft, an Air India flight 906 which had arrived from Dubai was rummaged.

On rummaging two heavy packets wrapped with white adhesive tapes were found concealed under one of the seats of the aircraft.

On opening the packets, the officials found six gold bars weighing one kg each with foreign markings “SAM 1 KILO FINE GOLD 999.9” totally weighing six kg and valued at Rs.2.90 crore and seized them as unclaimed under the Customs Act. Further investigation is under progress.
